Abstract

Introduction of water-efficient housing equipment leads to a reduction in electricity and fuel consumption for operating water and wastewater systems, and thus contributes to a reduction in GHG emissions. In this study, the city of Dalian in China was selected for a case study, and the CO[2] emission factor associated with water use here was computed from the quantity of water treated and the energy consumed at the water systems in Dalian. Next, the use model of the residential plumbing equipment was set up on the basis of a survey on water use in ordinary homes. The CO[2] emission reduction achieved by the widespread adoption of water-efficient housing equipment was calculated. On the basis of this calculation, the authors speculate that a maximum reduction of 16,000 t-CO[2]/year can be achieved by the widespread adoption of water-saving toilets.
