This investigation is about women who dressed as men in the Middle Ages. In medieval times cross-dressing was not just a mere ethical deviation in society but forthe church also it was considered a major sin. However, in spite of the fact that thegeneral ethical standards of that time considered these disguised women and men ascriminals, transvestite asymmetric diversity really existed. It was possible for a cross-dressing female to become even a saint but a cross-dressing male was never accepted by either secular society or the church. In this paper I consider how gender was used to structure a hierarchy in the male-dominated culture of medieval society and how it has lasted for such a long time. This is a preparatory work through which we historicize the appearance of social imparity between the sexes, female inferiority and feminine stereotypes.
