説明
The melting pot?pluralism debate has been popular in America since the 1960s, when the ethnicity question was raised as a challenge to Anglo-conformity among various ethnic groups, particularly White Ethnics such as Irish or Italians. This was originally touched off by the black liberation movement. This article examines what has happened to the ethnicity question; whether American society is now more ethnicity-conscious or more melting pot-oriented. The conclusion is that, as far as Jews and White Ethnics are concerned, assimilation, structural as well as cultural, has fully taken place and the initial differences between those groups and the mainstream groups are now disappearing to the extent that all whites are becoming indistinguishable in many respects. On the other hand, a clear division still exists between whites and non- European groups such as blacks, Hispanics and Asians, the overcoming of which should be the main target of American society.
