To what extent were the works of the Ming Ancient Rhetoric School 明代古文辞派 brought to Japan in the early Tokugawa period? This is a problem in the area of Kanbun Studies that has been researched but not fully resolved. This paper first surveys the subject and attempts to provide an answer. Based on this survey, I discuss the relationship between Ogyu Sorai's theories of poetry and prose of and the Ming Ancient Rhetoric School. First, I attempt to prove that Sorai's theories of poetry and prose were constructed based on the works and language of the Ming Ancient Rhetoric School. Also, I explain the reasons why Sorai committed himself to the Ming Ancient Rhetoric School's theories of poetry and prose in the context of Tokugawa Japan. I argue that in contrast to what many have claimed, the theories of poetry and prose of the Ming Ancient Rhetoric School and Sorai did more than only stress the plagiarism and imitation of ancient poetry. Rather, my analysis and theoretical investigations show that because the Ming Ancient Rhetoric School's theories of poetry and prose emphasized the importance of such ideas as "crafting language" 修辞, "form and rhythm" 格調, and "hue" 色, they helped Japanese overcome the problem of "wakun" 和訓. Also, they were thought to allow Japanese to write Chinese poetry and prose better than the Chinese themselves. This reason accounts for Sorai's commitment to the theories of poetry and prose of the Ming Ancient Rhetoric School.
