This article aims to analyze the change of organizations in Japanese local communities through comparison between neighborhood association called “chonaikai” and nonprofit organization (N.P.O.). They were organized after two large earthquakes, Kanto Earthquake (1923) and Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake (1995) respectively. First, I describe the organizing process of chonaikai and N.P.O. Secondly, I describe some significant features of chonaikai in comparison with N.P.O. to point out the differences between these two organizations. Thirdly, I point out the fact that the principle of chonaikai is altering into that of nonprofit organization in process of the change of community structure. Finally I indeicate the importance of partnership between these different types of organizations in local communities.
