Abstract

This article considers the relations between ritual performance and the culture of education, with regard to the bon ritual in Matsushima Town, Kami-Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture. The results are used to consider the concept of ma (between) in Japanese. In the bon ritual, burial, sekihan (festive red rice), and engawa (veranda-like porch) produce the ma between the dead and the living. In the ma, people perform the ritual, so that the dead and the living, or the living and the living can form an annual en (connection), and the ma as the region appears inherited from the ancestors to the coming generation.
