Description
Otsuka(1995) showed that passive sentences in Japanese are used in order that the conflict between the empathy hierarchies which Kuno (1978) has proposed is avoided, and those in English are used when the agent can not be mentioned, by comparing the use of passive sentences in Japanese with that in English, This paper deals with the relationship between empathy and the use of a passive sentence in Japanese relative clause construction. To summarize, the empathy in a relative clause is different rom that in a matrix sentenc in terms of Kuno's empathy hierarchies. There ise a tendency for the viewpoint from the referent of the head noun is kept in a relative clause, and consequently a passive sentence is used in the clause. It seems that the tendency is stronger, in case of that the discourse topic is the same referent with the head noun. These facts could be explained in terms of two concepts, that is, the thing which we fix our eyes upon and the point from which we fix our eyes.
