A considerable number of studies have been made on physical strengths and training methods of basketball players and basketball game analyses and tactics, etc. Little attention, however, has been given to the referees who are an indispensable part of basketball games. The purpose of this paper is to show an index of daily training and activities of JBA official referees for actual games by reviewing the exercise intensities and effects of refereeing in basketball games held in respective prefectures, and also by exploring to see if they are beneficial as healthy exercise for routine life. The number of referees’ steps measured with a pedometer while refereeing in the game of Prefectural Inter-High Scholl Championship, 2009 was 7,183.5±957.63. Taking into consideration that the number of steps of general adult males per day is about 5,000, the exercise intensity of referees over a short time is very strong. We weighed male referees and measured their body fat rate before and after games. As the result, weight loss was 1.40±0.67kg, and weight loss rate was 1.96±0.82%. The data are of great significance, suggesting that the exercise of basketball referees is relatively hard. As stated above, refereeing a game is very intensive and effective as aerobic exercise. Physical strength maintenance and improvement in daily life is indispensable in order for referees to keep active and also be regarded as life-long health exercise.
