I was an instructor and coordinator for the KODOMO KOUZA(Workshop for Supporting Parents in Nursing)at Kagoshima Immaculate Heart University in 2009 and 2010. Recently, many colleges have conducted workshops for supporting parents in nursing as teacher training. I will call these program “Supporting Parents Workshop” in this paper. The purpose of this paper is to propose educational tasks for teacher training at Supporting Parents Workshops by analyzing the participants’ feedback of our workshops, and by collecting suggestions as to what kind of support the participants wanted from workshops. One of the most important findings is that parents wanted student teachers to interact with their children. Previous studies stated negative opinions towards student teachers interacting directly with the participants’ children because it would be an obstacle for parents to interact with their children away from the workshop and it would not elevate parents selfreliance in interacting with their own children. However, this study clarifies that participating in a Supporting Parents Workshop in itself promotes a self-reliance attitude, and parents could watch their childrens’ growth by watching interacting with student teachers. In addition, student teachers need to gain the skill of playing with children. This study also clarifies that participants were moved by the students’ eager attitude toward the workshops more than other skills, such as singing, etc. Some parents expressed dissatisfaction with apparent mismatch of their children’s age, however they wanted to join subsequent workshops because the students’ eagerness created a fun environment. Thus, it is important for students to participate in Supporting Parents Workshops with enthusiasm. Previous studies tend to argue that student teacher skills of expression, explanation, singing and so on were not high enough. However, this study proposes that college instructors should pay more attention to how student teachers directly foster an enjoyable and fun experience for their participants and their children.
