SHIMA SEIKI Mfg., Ltd. is the leading manufacturer of the computerized flatbed knitting machine and related design systems which has its main office and factory in Wakayama City, Japan. Mr. Masahiro Shima, its current president, started the business. In the textile machine boom during Japan's high growth period, the company surpassed its competitors with its automation technology and high quality and performance of its products. Despite the negative impact of oil shock, it reached Japan's top three in ten years and world's top level in twenty years from the start-up with the successful development of mass-produced computerized machines and comprehensive design systems. Interviews with the company's retirees revealed that the engine of the organization at the earlier stage was the youth and hungry spirit shared by President Shima in his thirties and other employees with the average age of the twenties. Aiming at the very challenging goals set by President Shima, supporting each other, working closely with customers and learning various lessons from them, all members strived for acquiring knowledge and technology and succeeded in product development and mass production. The organizational basis for the growth of the company's business were (i) President Shima's soft and flexible management style which worked very effectively together with the employees' absolute belief in him and (ii) the "Shimaism" workplace culture which encouraged employees to support each other. For most employees, the company was a workplace which was demanding but with a lot of fun and reward.
