We have detected a few peptide fragments corresponding to cow type-I collagen by nano-liquid chromatography/ESI-mass spectrometry of a protein sample extracted from an ink stick of 8th century. The ink stick was found in a clay pot, which was excavated in 1977 from 5th Row Street, West 4th Ward in Heijo Capital Site. Each peptide peak detected in mass chromatogram was submitted to MS/MS analysis, followed by computational database search. The finding of cow collagen is consistent with the description of cowhide as a material of glue used to build a temple called Ishiyama-dera in "Shosoin Document" compiled in the mid 8th century.
