This study examines the effect of basic passing practice (underhand and overhand passing) and rally game practice for first grade female junior high school students, who learn volleyball for the first time. The study analyzes and compares the receiving success rate, the frequency with which the student touches the ball in the court and the rally frequency of each game before and after a volleyball training unit. Prior to the class the PE teacher had set the following unit target : ”All students should enjoy using three step attacks in their rally games”. The study’s results show that many students improve their individual skills of volleyball, that students’ receiving success rate during the game, the number of times a student touches the ball in the court and the rally frequency had improved in the game after the unit compared with before the unit. While the students’ game performance as such had not improved, the study found students engaging in a series of exciting rallies, winning a point with a spike and using three step attacks against their opponents, which added to their enjoyment of the game. The students’ formative evaluations, however, did not improve further through the unit process.
