The automatic color changes by utilizing the S_N1 and E1 reactions of t-butyl chloride were examined with various pigments, such as pH indicators and natural food colors which show the color change depending on the pH. We found that the way of the color change with a universal pH indicator was strongly influenced by the varieties of the water used for the experiment (various tap waters or the distilled water), probably due to the trace amount of impurities showing the buffer capacity in the water. The anthocyanin food colors, litmus and cochineal showed nice and different color changes respectively, though the discolorment was observed in the case of anthocyanins. The demonstration methods were developed and described.
