A continuous-flow system equipped with a fluoride ion-selective electrode (F-ISE) detector was constructed for the determination of low concentrations of aluminum ions. The buffer composed of a mixture of 0.11 mol dm-3 β-alanine (2-aminopropionic acid) and HCl containing 1.1x10-6 mol dm-3 fluoride was introduced into the sample line. The potential increase caused by the reaction between fluoride and aluminum was monitored by the F-ISE. A flow injection like signal is obtained by exchanging the sample and base fluoride solutions alternately. Thesensitivity defined as the difference in the peak heights of 10-7 and 10-6 mol dm-3 aluminum ions was about 25 mV. The detection limit is 1x10-7 mol dm-3. The precision of five independent measurements was 8-20% for 2-50x10-7 mol dm-3 aluminum standard solutions. The effect of fluoride and iron(III) ion in a sample was evaluated. The system was preliminarily applied to rain water analysis.
