The purpose of this study is to develop teaching plans of music appreciation for junior high school students, taking their daily musical life into consideration. For this purpose, firstly, a questionnaire survey was conducted to find their daily musical life. According to the result, students tended to listen to popular music without paying attention to the structure of the music. However, to appreciate European classical music, it is important to understand the structure of a piece of music. Therefore, secondly, I made two types of teaching plans for appreciation of Mahler's First Symphony, the third movement. In the plan A, students listened to the piece relying only on their feelings. In the plan B, students were required to understand the structure of the piece. Two plans were practiced. After comparing the results, I attempted to make a teaching plan for appreciation of Mahler's same piece, mixing plan B with plan A, and practiced the plan in music classes in a junior high school.
