Abstract

We examined the effect of lower abdominal warming (8hrs per day, for a total of 7days) on constipation in 9 volunteered female subjects (20±1y). A commercially available steaming pad (12cm x 20cm, Megu-rizumu, Kao Corp.Tokyo) that can generate steam heat to raise skin temperature up to 40℃ was outfitted on the lower abdomen with an attachment belt. Degree of constipation was measured with an 8 item questionnaire,"the Japanese version of the"Constipation Assessment Scale-short term (CAS-ST)", which consists of questions for eight bowel symptoms of constipation. The total score of CAS-ST changed significantly from 7.71±1.98 to 5.57±2.21 as a result of abdominal warming. Significant improvement was observed in 5 symptoms including abdominal distension, frequency of bowel movements, incomplete evacuation, bulk amount, and smooth anal passage. The Stool Form Scale changed significantly from 1.56±1.96 to 2.79±2.07 as a result of abdominal warming. This suggests that sufficient abdominal warming may promote intestinal movement as well as the defecation reflex. In conclusion, long-term abdominal warming with a heating pad seems to be an effective and convenient alternative treatment for constipation.
