Abstract

The archaeologist appeared in Japanese comics which are one of the contemporarypopular cultures at many comic writer's works including the maestros of Japanese comiccommunity, such as Osamu Tezuka and Shoutarou Ishinomori. Although there were notso many comics in which an archaeologist appeared till the 1960s, when the 1970s came,the number of the comics increased, and reflecting a social trend of those days. For example,some archaeologist characters appeared in the work which was subject to the influenceof the occult boom of 1970s. And the archaeologist character of 1950s-1960s wasmiddle-aged man and usually wore the scholar like suit, and wore fatigue uniform or Safarilook at excavation and outdoor activity. After 1970s, the new archaeologist characterof different image from these characters has appeared. Japanese comic works can be regardedas precious data which can know the image of archaeologist and archaeology inJapanese society of those days.
