Abstract

1955 is often mentioned as the birth year of rock 'n' roll. It is because "Rock Around The Clock" of this year, by Bill Haley and his Comets, became a big hit and created the rock 'n' roll sensation after that. In a series of recording started in 1951, He had been trying to fuse the country music and the rhythm and blues. "Rock Around The Clock" was released in 1954 but at this time, it never caught big attention. In the next year, it was used under the opening credits of the film "Blackboard Jungle" and became an unprecedented hit. Why did it happen like that? There would be some reason in the times than in the music itself. America in the first half of the 50s was in the economic boom after the war, and "Red Scare" of McCarthyism went on a rampage. High schools were sealed with the conservative ideology and the teenagers were incorporated into the consumption society which was brought about from the highly developed capitalism economy. Under this conflict "Rock Around The Clock" became the certificate of the existence of such a generation.
