Abstract

Community inclusion of the elderly is required for aged care in Japan. We collaborated with a local government, to hold an event“ preventive aged care project in Toshima". In order to evaluate 3rd year occupational therapy students', who participated in the event, progress, we conducted the qualitative measure survey. Prior to the event in January 2010, students covered basic aged care curriculum. After the 3 day event, students were then required to write a report of their thoughts and impression and submit it. The reports were analyzed by using SPSS text analysis for surveys Ver.3.0. There were 71 volunteer participants, 32 males and 39 females. The student volunteers were involved in the entire process from preparation to conclusion. From the report analysis, we found 14 repeated words used at least 30 times each. From the results, students seemed to better understand the community care system. They described their positive impressions of aged people. They realized that the elderly also laugh and joke with each other. Students could relate to their future career and aged care giving. This regional alliance study was a good chance for the students to become involved in an unfamiliar community environment.
