Description

Because of the demand for more highly skilled pharmacists and the introduction of 6-year pharmacist education, an effective learning system is required in the pharmaceutical school. To provide enjoyable self-teaching educational materials, we developed two serious games called Mentor and Kuthrill. The former is an electronic workbook in the state examination for the pharmacist's license with a face-based indicator. The latter is a Tetris type puzzle game designed to teach correct combinations of drug names and pharmacological categories. Both games are designed for students to acquire pharmaceutical knowledge while gaming without stress. The gaming time and score are recorded automatically. In this study, graduate research students were nominated as monitors. They played games under actual circumstances and the learning curves of scores and play times were analyzed. Both games were effective in most cases, though benefits were ambiguous in some cases. Further research is required to develop more useful serious games.
