The purpose of this paper is to clarify characteristics and problems of historical approaches in the study of social welfare using the search of Hideshi Harasaki's notes as an example. Harasaki draws attention as a key person who introduced home-help services from England to Japan after the war. Nonetheless, because his records are difficult to obtain, conventional previous reports have described the historical development of home-help services in general terms without details of Harasaki's challenges. Here, we can infer some problems of a historical study in the field of social welfare. For that reason, this paper is devoted to gathering information related to Harasaki employing data collection and interviews as main approaches. Findings from the discovery of Harasaki's own handwriting journal, Kako ; Dai 1 shu , became raw data to elucidate unexplained points in the history of home-help services in post-war Japan. Based on a series of study processes, the following five points were regarded as characteristics and problems of historical approaches in the study of social welfare. 1) Historical materials related to private individuals are often lying idle in private homes, so operations to uncover them should be undertaken in a hurry. 2) For historical study abroad, preliminary study is important. 3) Because the retention period for public documents and materials is generally five years, rapid progress of historical studies is desirable. 4) Because historical studies require great costs, group study is an effective approach. 5) “The study of the origin", which traces back further to the starting point, is important.
