It is not uncommen to see nursing students struck dumb found at the bedside of an elderly patient. It takes time and training to understand how a once healthy active individual can be struck down by illness. Society is now aging, however, the number of three generation households is now half of what it was in 1990. According to a survey carried out of 107. 2nd year nursing students, only 26% were found to be living with an elderly person and a mere 12% were living with 9 disabled elderly person. To sum up, very few nursing students born after 1990 have had the opportunity to come in contact with an elderly person with a disability. We,therefore, introduced as teaching material. “A Giant of Few Words" a book which tells the story of an immunologist who was struck down by a cerebral infarction. Active worldwide because of his work and also an individual with many interests, his life was radically changed by his sickness. The book book examines the psychological effect and the importance of the family in such circumstances. Because of the cerebral infarction, the hitherto active immunologist was left partly paralysed on his ride side with both speech and swallowing impairments. He was informed that qradvally his paralysis would heal, however, because of his paralysis he was unable to speak. Unable to drink because of his swallowing impediment, he began to consider giving up hope .He began to consider everything loss and despise himself as simply an extreme producing machine.Only the self, sacrificing nursing efforts of his doctor wife helped him overcome this feeling of despair.
