This article considers the psychological implications of the test for controlled variables (TCV) in Perceptual Control Theory (PCT). PCT is a control theory based on control system engineering which explains human behavior. PCT was developed by William Powers during the 1960s. In PCT, control is a fundamental feature of living systems including humans. Control refers to the maintenance of their specified variables within a limited range. Control of their inputs can be achieved by negative feedback loops. The controlled inputs are called controlled variables. The TCV is the methodology for finding the controlled variables. In psychology, the TCV has been introduced by William Powers and Richard Marken. This article on Marken's works discusses how to use the TCV. The TCV starts with a hypothesis about a controlled variable. The hypothesis is tested by applying disturbances. If the hypothetical controlled variable is being controlled, these disturbances will be resisted. If, on the other hand, these disturbances have an effect, the hypothetical controlled variable is not under control. This article introduces the five features of the TCV. (1) The TCV differs from the typical experimental research method in psychology. Whereas the experimental research method looks for an effect of disturbances, the TCV aims at finding a lack of effect of disturbances on a hypothetical controlled variable. (2) The TCV creates hypotheses about a person's goal. (3) The TCV is used to test the behavior of one individual at a time. (4) The results of research using the TCV can be validated using modeling techniques. (5) The TCV can be used in therapeutic interviews to determine the client's controlled variables. The TCV and PCT are little known, but adopting the TCV seems to have new implications for psychology. Further research will be required to test the TCV and PCT in Japan.
