Search this article
Description
Purpose:The authors investigated the ethical roles of nursing staff on palliative care wards who provide deep continuous sedation and maintain the quality of life of terminal-stage cancer patients. Methods:Fifteen nurses completed a questionnaire survey that included 15 multiple-choice items and an open-ended question on psychological-spiritual care for patients. The collected responses were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test for quantitative data and content analysis for qualitative data. Results:The analysis revealed that 70 % of nurses studied sedation prior to joining a palliative care ward. However, 30% of nurses indicated that they do not understand the definition of sedation and 50% of nurses indicated that do not understand levels of sedation. Overall, 80 % of nurses responded that informed consent is used to promote patient autonomy and that each patient's decision-making should be clear in the patient's mind. Responses to the open-ended question were grouped into the following categories: `Consideration of the dignity and quality of life of the patient' and `Evaluating the quality and effects of deep continuous sedation'. Conclusion:The following ethical issues for nursing staff were identified: It is extremely important for nurses to understand medical science. Nurses must improve their consideration of the dignity and quality of life of patients and their families.
