Abstract Chemical interaction near the interface between human tooth enamel and aqueous solution of polyacrylic acid which is a component of new types of dental adhesive material was examined by infra-red spectroscopy. Human tooth enamel plate was prepared by polishing on abrasive paper. The plates coated with aqueous solution of polyacrylic acid were quickly loaded on the ATR prism. In the spectra obtained, new absorption bands appeared at 1540 and 1404cm-1. This indicates that calcium polyacrylate was formed near the interface between human tooth and aqueous solution of polyacrylic acid. This salt formation seems to contribute to the strong adhesive force of the new adhesive materials.
