Description

type:論文

The financial crisis in Korea led to unemployment problems; consequently, a section of the unemployed people moved to the rural areas and began engaging in agriculture. Based on a field survey, this paper aims to explore how and why the unemployed were led to “return to the farm." The rural areas considered in the study are Kyunggi, Kyungsangnam, and Kyungsangbuk Province; in Kyungsangbuk Province in particular, a substantial number of people moved to Sungju County. Therefore, the paper chiefly focuses on the case of Sungju County in Kyungsangbuk Province. Sungju County is notable for its original plantations of sweetmelons(Chamoe). By the early 1990s, Sweetmelon had already become a big brand in Korea. Nowadays, some farmers earn more than 100 million won from the cultivation of sweetmelon. The field survey conducted in this study reveals the following characteristics of the people who were part of the “return to the farm" phenomenon: (1) Most of the people are originally from Sungju county (U-turn migration). (2) They are blue-collar workers or workers in service industries in the neighboring city of Daegu. (3) They are in their 30's or 40's. (4) They can share the sweetmelon farms owned by their parents. Sweetmelon was expected to be a lucrative source of income for these people.
