Abstract

The type of forestry in Indonesia can be classified into two main categories; the teak forest management in Jawa with artificial regeneration, and the timber extraction from natural forest in Outer Islands, which is done for the export by capital intensive management. During 1950s, forest policy was concentrated on Jawa. It was not until 1960s that the abundant natural forest resources attracted the government, and forest concessions have been set up all over the natural forestland in Indonesia since 1970s under the foreign capital policy of Soeharto Order. As the result of such expansion of forest development, the forest law and regulations, and forestry systems were reorganized under the initiative of large capitals, and then the customary type of forestry, which has produces woods for local consumption, or the traditional use of forestland under hukum Adat (customary law) has been compelled to change, especially in the areas where forest development has evvolved intensively and rapidly.
