Abstract

We focused on local maximum filtering method as one of the extraction methods for single tree apex, and performed the stand density estimation of Japanese cedar plantation using GeoEye-1 panchromatic image (0.5-m spatial resolution). In this paper, we examined about the effect of filter size of maximum filter, low-pass filter for noise reduction and radiometric resolution conversion on stand density estimation. The study area was Japanese cedar plantation stands located around Takigashira wetland in Aga town, Niigata. Stand density estimation was performed by the extraction of the apex of each crown with the filter size of 3x3, 5x5 and 7x7. There was negative correlation between the filter size and stand density, and it was confirmed that optimal filter size varied according to stand density. Image processing without the low-pass filter indicated the overestimation of stand density because apex candidate was extracted excessively. Although radiometric resolution was converted from original 11-bit data to 8-bit, both results were almost the same. The determination of optimal filter size according to the situation of a stand is a topic of future research.
