Abstract

After the cold war, the world entered into the age of ethnic conflicts and the new paradigm of democratic nation-state has been pursued. In Indonesia, after the fall of president Suharto in 1998, there occurred many ethnic conflicts throughout the nation. This article analyses the case of West Kalimantan province to understanding the quality of ethnic disturbance that is different from independence oriented two provinces (Aceh and Papua other than East Timor) among 31 provinces. It is true that the traditional communities of indigenous Dayak were systematically destroyed. But we need to have the understanding that comes not only from the state suppression, but also the expansion of high-culture Indonesian government systematically introduced that were symbolized by national education, modernization, leveling up of living standard, young guys entering into local government etc. The present decentralization framework has many shortcomings but it doesn't have the orientation against the central government but it moves to the new paradigm for democratic nation-building.
