説明

A severe earthquake with magnitude of 8.1 struck East Hokkaido at 22.23 hrs on Oct. 4,1994. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) the epicenter was located at latitude 43.67°N and longitude 147.36°E,and the depth of hypocenter was 30 Km. In the Shiretoko Peninsula, which is situated at a distance of 210 to 240 Km from the epicenter, a reading of 5 on the JMA seismic intensity scale was recorded and some landslides were triggered by the earthquake. Morever, phenomena likely triggered by subsolifluctions were reported. Landslides triggered by the earthquake are recognized as of three types : rock falls, debris avalanches and surface-soil slides. Rock falls and debris avalanches occurred from sea-cliffs and old landslide scarps of Quaternary volcanic rocks, and surface-soil slides from steep talus slopes, river terrace scarps and steep artificial slopes of unconsolidated materials.
