説明

Few Rhododendron japonicum flowers have been observed on Mt. Amari, in western Yamanashi Prefecture, central Japan in 2004. An empirical study was conducted and reasons for the lack of flowers were considered. Many shrub trees, R. japonicum and Spiraea japonica 70-100cm in height, had no flowers and leaves because their shoots did not have winter buds, but some lower part shoots in the same individuals bloomed and foliated. More R. japonicum under tree crowns and standing nearby tree stands tended to have many flowers and leaves with opening buds. Upper layer shoots of Sasa nipponica in open space with R. japonicum were also dried and dead, though lower part shoots and leaves under tree stands were normal. These observations could be caused by dry winter wind and/or moving ice crystals affecting the plants because of less snow accumulation in the winter form 2003 to 2004. Winter precipitation was assumed to be half that of the past several years. Furthermore, low snow accumulation and a shorter snow cover period may cause late spring frost easily. We need more detailed research and careful conservation practices because global warming may lead to less snow in the future.
