Taiwan is an immigrant society and most of its cultural customs, religious practices, and beliefs came from China during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Belief in the marine goddess Maso, now deeply rooted in Taiwan, also came from China. The beliefs and practices that originated in China have evolved in the Taiwanese context as society in Taiwan continued to change over time. This paper examines certain changing features of Maso belief m Taiwan and highlights the semantic symbolism of this belief for the immigrant society of Taiwan.
