Maize has always held great importance in Mexico, not only for people living in the present but also historically for those who lived in the same territory. Maize is an essential food source and instilled with religious meaning. Thus, it is deeply rooted in the daily lives of Mexicans, earning the territory the name "The Maize Country: Mexico." On the other hand, modernization has brought about significant changes with regard to maize. During the green revolution, the agricultural technology was introduced to achieve the progress of productivity; and the conclusion of NAFTA brought the market economy to the conventional maize cultivation. This study focuses on the community, illustrating the importance and how the value of maize has changed for the producers. During the fieldwork in the Chiapas Highlands, there was a change in how people perceived the value of maize. They had reevaluated their maize from something ordinary to something "precious" and "to be protected", and rediscovered it as "Our Maize." This movement has been analyzed based on Giddens' "modernization" to demonstrate the process of recreation and reconstruction of "Our Maize" and further explored the "Our Maize Culture" which is associated with maize cultivation.
