Description

This paper aims at clarifying the semantic and syntactic features of temporal expressions "-NARI" and "-TA TOTAN" using the semantic analysis methodology of Kunihiro (1982). It was found that both expressions have semantic features of "temporally immediately after" and "simultaneity." As well, "-NARI" has a syntactic feature that a movement verb from the outside into the inside precedes it and an utterance by an agent in the main-clause or the subordinate-clause follows it. On the other hand, it was found that a verb expressing an action or a change precedes "-TA TOTAN" and verbs expressing a change or an uncontrollable affair or phenomena appear after it in the main-clause. Finally, as a future issue in this research area, an investigation into whether an implication of "unexpectedness" can be involved or not in the main-clause of both expressions will be needed.
