The structure of lexical representations in semantic memory and their processes were investigated through phonological priming effects in lexical decision task and reading task using Japanese Kanji words. The SOA condition between prime stimuli and target stimuli was varied at 400 ms and 1000 ms. Subjects were 24 undergraduate students. Twelve subjects were assigned one of two task conditions, lexical decision task or reading task. The primes and targets were two-character Kanji words or non-words. Five priming conditions were as follows, the identical character condition, the same character condition, and the different character condition which had same phonology, the unrelated character condition with different phonology, and the neutral condition. In both the lexical decision tasks and reading tasks, priming effects in the identical character condition were larger than the two other prime conditions with the same phonology, and the priming effects of these two conditions were larger than the unrelated character condition in particularly at SOA 400 ms. These results suggested that it might take shorter time to spread activation in lexical representation than in conceptual meaning representation.
