Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of swimming training on myoglobin(Mb) content and enzyme activity in murine skeletal muscle. ICR male mice were assigned to control, mild exercise, moderate exercise and heavy exercise groups. Exercise groups were trained by swimming treadmill 5 days per week for 12 weeks. The body weight and adipose tissue weight of mice in moderate and heavy exercise groups were significantly lower than those in control group. Swimming time to exhausion in heavy exercise group (82 ±36min) was significantly (P<0.001) longer than that of control group(21 ±11min). Althogh Mb contents of soleus muscle in trained groups were ~28% lower than control group, there were no significnat differences of Mb contents in diaphragm and cardiac muscle between control and trained groups. There was no effect of swimming training on citrate synthase activity and lactate dehydrogenase activity in skeletal and cardiac muscle. These results suggest that there is no effect of exercise by swimming treadmill on increasing capacity of aerobic metabolism in murine skeletal and cardiac muscle.
