This study examined the effects of a captioned DVD movie on the beginning level of EFL students' listening ability with English phonetic instruction and listing tasks. All the subjects were first given the same comprehension questions after watching a bimodal captioned movie. Then they were divided into two groups; the first group was given a dictation task with a brief lecture of segmental and non segmental features of English phonetics. The other group was given extra comprehension task while they were watching the same DVD material. The listening part of SLEP tests were administered before and after the treatment. The analysis of the data revealed that both groups showed significant improvement after 10 weeks of this experiment. Comparing the two groups, the group with the dictation task outperformed the other. The data indicated that it's important for the beginning level of EFL students to be acquainted with the sound system of English with the effective tasks and instruction to enhance their listening comprehension skill.
