Growth, yield potential and grain quality of rice plants were examined in 17 terraced paddy fields in Yamakoshi. Date of transplanting ranged from 5 May, 2009 to 30 May among 17 fields, heading date from 6 Aug. to 19 Aug. and time of harvesting from 18 Sept. to 7 Oct. Chlorophyll contents or color of uppermost leaf were measured on 17 and 30 Jul., 12 and 31 Aug., 11 Sept. and harvesting time by SPAD-502 (MINOLTA co., Japan). The SPAD values decreased gradually with the progress of growth, and final values at harvest were quite different between 17 fields ranging from 6.2 to 24.2. The yield of brown rice varied from 252 to 591 kg/10a, and the differences were not dependent of the degree of earthquake damage, but of the environmental conditions of the original field location. Eating quality of the grain was examined by PS-500 (Shizuoka-Seiki co., Shizuoka); among 17 fields, protein content varied from 5.7 to 7.6%, and the scores of the taste were from 66 to 89, where both characters were highly correlated (r=0.975). Protein content was also highly correlated with SPAD values, especially with those of harvesting time (r=0.778). It was suggested that the growth diagnosis by the SPAD values was very important for obtaining high quality rice grain.
