The contents and distribution of glycoalkaioid (as α-solanine equivalents) in sprouted and non-sprouted potatos (sp. Mayqueen) purchased at a market in KOBE were investigated by the method of Gull and Isenberg with concentrated sulphuric acid and formaldehyde, and the following results were obtained: 1. Potato sprouts contained a large amount of solanine more than 100㎎/100g. 2. The solanine contents of a part (1㎤) around sprout (eliminated sprout) were higher than that of periderm (5㎜ thick) and the contents were found around 40㎎/100g. 3. The solanine contents of periderm in sprouted potato were higher than that of non-sprouted potato, but the solanine contents in the remaining part (edible part) of sprouted potato eliminated fully periderm 5㎜ thick, sprouts and parts around sprouts were found to be similar level in the non-sprouted potato.
