When discussing some cultural phenomena in sociology educational context, there is a school of thought that refuse to write criticism or justify writing impressions. Author-centredness and value relativism tend to fall into such thinking. In this paper, we propose to find a way to get over the impressions and criticize them by gradually introducing the viewpoints of “criticism of works” and “cultural criticism”. For that purpose, we examined urban legends related to four animation works My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea, Howl' s Moving Castle and Frozen. Since urban legends are often unclear, various impressions are often confused. But in itself it can be said to be the archetype of criticism. The above four works can be discussed with a definite distinction between the intentions of the “author”, what is written in the “work”, the interpretation of the “reader”, and the “culture” behind the work. In doing so, we clarified that a sociological perspective is needed to describe how culture prescribes the interpretation of the work.
