Description

Kyoko Shimoyama was a female reporter who joined "Osaka Jiji Shimpo, " which was launched as the representative of the high-class newspaper "Jiji Shimpo" in Western Japan at the end of the Meiji Era. She was good at the style of disguise and infiltration reporting. Shimoyama was regarded as a reprobate, but at the same time she was a woman who went beyond the limits of the fixed idea of how women should be. Faced with the need to procure their own manuscripts for the evening edition, Osaka Jiji adopted a series of stories such as the infiltration of Kobe's luxury restaurant "Tokiwa Kadan" by Shimoyama and succeeded in developing the new style of news story. It was an approach that helped Osaka Jiji complete its own pages in Osaka, where news was not necessarily abundant. The new style was also characterized by its compassion toward people at the bottom of the socioeconomic hierarchy, without being particular about realizing social justice. However, facing criticism for sensational journalism, Osaka Jiji was compromised, and Shimoyama, who was transferred to Tokyo, lost her brilliance in the Osaka period.
