説明

The number of mountaineering accidents in Japan has increased since 1991 to more than 800 in 1996. Durig that ratio of senior-aged hikers to the total people involved in mountaineering accidents has increased by 3% per year to 76%(1997) ; so that the National Police Agency, the Minstty od Educatino, and all Alpine clubs are treating accidents of senior-aged hikers as a serious problem. The main causes of mountaineering accidents are: slipping, and subsequently sliding (or falling) down a slope ; becoming lost ; and physical illness. The most common cause throughout Japan is slipping. All reports, however, record only the final result, nemely "slid down" , with no information about a hiker's equipment, physical condition, degree of attentivenss, tiredness, or trail condition. Questionnaires were used to obtain this basic information. The questionnaires were completed 8 November by hikers on six mountains in the Okutama, northwest of Tokyo. The data showed that most hikers were in their fifties. Comparison of men and women in their fifties suggested that in general, women have very few of hiking experience and are dependent on other people. The prevention of accidents caused by slipping requires information about the resonts for slipping. Most hikers slip 1-2 times while descending on 75% of a route. Hikers mainly slip on gravel roads, covered with leaves, wet rocks, and exposed roots, not on icy, snowy or muddy roads - obvious slippery conditions. This means that the reasons for slipping are not always road conditions - attentiveness may be involved. Attentiveness is reduced during descent for 75% of a route. Methods of preventing mountaineering accidents caused by slipping were developed from the analysis of the questionnaires - they apply to all age groups.
