Abstract

The S-310-18 rocket was launched on 26th January, 1988 at 11 : 00 JST. The main purpose of the rocket experiment is the study of the anomalous increase of the electron temperature in the mid-latitude E-region ionosphere during the daytime. Our instrument named COL-W, was installed to measure the temperature ratio of electrons to neutral particles, T_e/T_n, and the D-region electron density by the radio absorption technique. At the same time, some of the new wave instruments that will be used in the future spacecraft missions were tested. This paper presents briefly the characteristics of the COL-W radio wave measurement system and the VIP by which the impedance of the dipole antenna is measured. Next, the ionospheric parameters such as the electron density and collison frequency are estimated from absorption of radio waves transmitted from the ground in the VLF and MF bands. It is found that the ratio T_e/T_n shows a peak of about 2.5 at an altitude of 105km. This result is consistent with simultaneous measurements by the TEL instrument on this rocket.
