Several experiments on the magnetic annular shock tube (MAST) and comparisons with theoretical results calculated by a simplifying analysis are given in the present paper. In the first part, some results of introductory experiments on the nature of the flow in the MAST and of the shock ionized air are reported. In the preliminary experiments using pyrex glass with the annulus ratio of 0.438, non-uniformities of shock fronts caused by the circumferentially non-uniform discharge are measured to give errors of about 4-16% in distance. Next, improved experiments using devices made by stainless pipes with the annulus ratio of 0.255 are reported. Electric resistance and inductance of the circuit were, 0.134Ω and 0.75μH, respectively, the shock speeds were 1.3-3.2cm/μs and the equilibrium temperature of the air was estimated to be in between 10,000-25,000°K. Measured shock positions varying with time were compared with the snow-plow theory within the error of 10-20%. Some preliminary measurements using a photomultiplier and magnetic probes are reported. In the second part, effects of gas acceleration by an externally applied magnetic field are investigated experimentally, and compared with the snow-plow theory under the assumption of Kulikovskii-Lyubimov, which shows apparent coincidences between experiments and the theory. The maximum shock speed was raised to about 1.5 times the usual case by the external field.
