本研究では，近年導入された「卒乳（自然卒乳）」の概念を，「離乳」，「乳離れ」，「断乳」との関連で考察する．「離乳」は，栄養学的・発育学的な視点からの食べ物を噛みつぶすことができるようになるまでの体の発達を含めた食の自立過程を表す．一方，「乳離れ」は，母親の乳首への吸いつきをやめることであり，この「乳離れ」には，児以外の意思，主に母親の意思が働いて児が乳首から離れる「断乳」と，児の意思が尊重され児の意思で離れていく「卒乳」が存在する．特に卒乳は心理学的な児の自立過程を示す．専門職と母親が卒乳の概念を十分に理解することは，母子ともに満足できる乳離れを行う上で重要である．「卒乳」は，約半数程度の母親が理解していた．

There are two Japanese terms for weaning, "rinyu" and "chichibanare". The former emphasizes the nutritional and dietary development of babies in the process of changing from milk to solid food, whereas the latter emphasizes the psychological development of babies not to be attached to mother's nipples. There are two ways how a baby separates from breast-feeding. "Danyu" has been used as a term to stop breast-feeding by mother's will, whereas the concept of "sotsunyu" was introduced in 1990s which pay attention for weaning on baby's initiative. We discuss the importance of understanding the concept of "sotsunyu" for better psychological waning for mothers and babies.
