Description
Essay writing is often excluded or skipped in high school English education because it is thought to take time and to not help students to pass entrance examinations. Also, many teachers find it difficult to balance developing students’ communicative abilities and their ability to pass entrance examinations. In this paper, I explain how I applied a process approach to high school writing classes and how I modified writing tasks in a workbook to make them more communicative. I argue that a process approach in writing is beneficial for students in developing critical thinking skills as well as grammatical knowledge through peer feedback and opinion exchanges. I suggest teachers create environments where students use English in meaningful contexts and can relate their own experiences to writing tasks.
