Description

This is a report on activities using "Yasashii Nihongo (plain Japanese)" in multicultural classes where international and Japanese students studied together. They were planned in cooperation with the tourism policy of Bibai City promoting hospitality of local residents to welcome any visitor using Yasashii Nihongo. The activities included fieldworks in Bibai, online communication with Bibai locals and group projects. It was found that both international and Japanese students developed similar views on the concept of Yasashi Nihongo. Both native speakers and non-native speakers pointed out that it is difficult to produce Yasashii Nihongo and attitudes and mindset to consider non-native speakers can be as important as pragmatic language skills.
