[概要]1867年に福沢諭吉の『西洋旅案内』によってわが国に近代的保険制度が初めて紹介された同じ頃，「ポンチ絵」と呼ばれる諷刺漫画が読者の人気を博していた。なかでも近代漫画の祖とされる北澤楽天が担当した「時事漫画」は，『時事新報』から独立した初の新聞日曜漫画版として新たなジャンルを確立した。「時事漫画」の中で，北澤楽天は当時の保険業界の実情を踏まえた上で，火災保険や生命保険，保険勧誘員，保険診査医など様々な視点から近代保険制度に翻弄される人々をユーモラスに描いている。保険に関する北澤楽天の洞察力は鋭く，黎明期のわが国の近代的保険制度を知る上で，価値ある史料となっている。 [Abstract] When the modern insurance system was first introduced to Japan by Yukichi Fukuzawa’s “Seiyou Tabi Annai” in 1867, the satirical cartoon called “Ponchie” was popular among readers. As the ancestor of modern manga, Rakuten Kitazawa created “Jiji Manga.” He established a new genre as the first Sunday newspaper cartoon version that became independent from “Jiji Shimpo.” In “Jiji Manga,” Rakuten Kitazawa humorously portrayed the insurance industry at that time from various perspectives such as fire insurance, life insurance, insurance agents, and medical examiners. He had a keen eye for insurance, and his works serve as valuable historical materials for learning about the early days of Japan’s modern insurance system.
