Assessing the Effectiveness of Social Skills Training (SST) and Training Programs for Basic Nursing Eeducation

This study first aimed to assess the educational effectiveness of Social Skills Training (SST) three months after it was provided to nursing students. Secondly, this study aimed to assess the effectiveness of training programs conducted during SST from studentsfeedback for each session and their evaluation of the seminar. The SST executed in this study was comprised of 13 sessions, attended by 24 first-year nursing students (5 males: mean age 20.0 years; and 18 females: mean age 20.3 years). The purpose of the SST was to develop an effective educational program designed to improve social skills. The students' social skills were assessed using Kikuchi's Social Skill Scale (KiSS-18) before initiation of the sessions and three months after sessions were completed

Results revealed that students' scores related to emotional self-control, a subscale for assessing social skills, increased (p=.09). Regarding the effectiveness of each program, students' social skills scores increased after participating in the following two programs: "An introduction to communication and non-verbal communication" and "Assertive communication skills (I-message and positive rephrasing)" (F (1, 18) = 5.58, p<.05, F (1, 20) = 5.88, p<.05). Results of this survey suggest that SST is an effective teaching model in basic nursing education for improving social skills, and that programs focusing on non-verbal communication and assertive communication skills are effective in SST.
