Abstract

Seasonal changes of body weight were investigated in the house-dwelling bat, Pipistrellus abramus, in the western part of Japan. Parturition period was from the middle of June to the beginning of July. Hibernation period was from the middle of October to the late of March. Female body weight attained its peak just before the parturition. Body weight increased from August to October in the adults and young. Body weight attained its peak before the hibernatioin of the adults and young. Fat deposition started a little later in the young than in the adults. The average ratio of decreasing body weight in the hibernation period is about 21.3-25.3% in adult females, 20.3-26.0% in young females and 24.3-27.1% in young meles. Because the average of body weight decreased from 9.3g to 7.1g in females by their parturition, the loss of their body weight is 23.7%. The body weight of the young in both sexes is significantly less than that of the adults until autumn in the first year.
